Modern Architecture Masterpieces

This post is about your our favorite Modern Architecture Buildings. Starting with my own favorite, N. Valsamakis House in Anavyssos, 1961.

Modern architecture is a term applied to an overarching movement and period in architectural history during the 20th century, with its exact definition and scope varying widely.^[1] In one of the broader meanings, as will be used here, modern architecture began at the turn of the 20th century with efforts to reconcile the principles underlying architectural design with rapid technological advancement and the modernization of society. It would take the form of numerous movements, schools of design, and architectural styles, some in tension with one another, and often equally defying such classification.^[1]

Characteristics of modern architecture, particularly modernist architecture, may include:

• “Form follows function“: the principle that the materials and functional requirements determine the result
•  an adoption of the machine aesthetic (using industrially-produced materials)
• an emphasis of horizontal and vertical lines
• a creation of ornament using the structure and theme of the building, or a rejection of ornamentation.
• a simplification of form and elimination of “unnecessary detail”
• an adoption of expressed structure^{[clarification needed]}
• Truth to materials
